Day 1
Arrival in Jaisalmer – Exploring the Golden City
Quick check in your hotel, freshen up and start your sightseeing in Jaisalmer. The first thing to do when you arrive at Jaisalmer is Jaisalmer Fort also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort. It is situated on Trikuta Hill and boasts of being built in 1156 AD by Raja Rawal Jaisal.
This massive fort is spread out in front of the city. It is one of the very few 'living forts' of all the world, as shops, temples, and residences are still there within it. It’s still walkable and points of interest include beautiful Jain temples surrounding the narrow lanes, and the local markets selling handicrafts and souvenirs.
Next is Patwon Ki Haveli, a famous cluster of five havelis constructed by a wealthy merchant family, which you then head to next. Its intricately carved surfaces, huge arches, and pretty balconies are also part of this architectural masterpiece.
Each haveli is unique for exquisite mirror work and paintings. The most famous and first or the so one which is now a museum exhibit are havelis or the first one with which you can see artefacts from the past of Rajasthan.
Go to Gadisar Lake, which was formed in the 14th century by Maharawal Gadsi Singh and is a peaceful oasis in the evening. This artificial lake was surrounded by beautiful temples and cenotaphs and was the sole source of water in Jaisalmer.
Day 2
Architecture Place And Desert Experience
Following your breakfast, you check out and head to Kuldhara Village (18 km from Jaisalmer) that had been abandoned a few centuries back. In the 19th century, it mysteriously became deserted overnight and was once prosperous as a settlement of the Paliwal Brahmins.
For a haunting and fascinating tale, the ruins of Kuldhara are one of the most intriguing places in Rajasthan to visit. Feel the silence in the empty streets and the abandoned house, and walk through this historic site.
Next, head to the Sam Sand Dunes, the highlight of any Jaisalmer trip. About 40 km from the city are these vast dunes that are ideal for an experience of the desert. Then make an exciting camel safari over the golden sands to a wonderful sunset. Jeep safaris also provide thrills for people, speedily passing through the dunes.
At a desert camp enter into the Rajasthani cultural experience with a traditional folk dance and music performance as the evening sets in. It has the enchanted sounds of traditional instruments running alongside the liveliness of dance forms such as Kalbeliya Ghoomar. Dinner here will include local delicacies such as dal Baati Churma and Gatte Ki Sabzi.
You will then be driven back to Jaisalmer for your onward journey, having had an unforgettable desert experience and keeping in your memory the Golden City.
